Car issues? Beginning Driver?

Okay so I just got my license and I've had an issue with my truck (2004 Toyota Tacoma), where when I am backing out of a stall it wont let me move. Today I pulled out of a stall, I know I didnt have the parking break set and it was clearly in reverse, but when I eased my foot off the break to back up it went forward instead. What I ended up doing is putting it back into park and turning the car off and then just restarted it and it backed up fine. Was this just me being an idiot or is there some issue with my truck, its getting a service later this month by the way
