What are other creepy contraptions like the iron lung?

When polio was a disease that was not prevented by immunizations, people caught polio and got crippled legs or muscles in their chest that did not work. These iron lungs helped them to breath. Creepy, but necessary if your diaphragm and intercostal muscles do not bring air into your lungs.
